Just before the tragic death of Jim Traficant in the fall of 2014, the House unanimously passed dangerous legislation that seeks to stifle free speech and thought. Sold as only targeting “violence” and “racism,” the bill attacks critics of Israel—a disturbing proposition that could eventually lead to making criticism of Israel illegal.
The long title of the bill is “Condemning all forms of anti-Semitism and rejecting attempts to justify anti-Jewish hatred or violent attacks as an acceptable expression of disapproval or frustration over political events in the Middle East or elsewhere.”
The resolution was authored by Representatives Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) and Kay Granger (R-Texas) to condemn what they described as “the rising tide of anti-Semitism” around the world.
It was unanimously passed by the House on September 18, 2014, in the aftermath of Israel’s bloody attack on Gaza in the summer of 2014, which left over 2,000 Palestinians dead, 500 of whom were children.
And while the measure had no teeth, fostering this kind of atmosphere in the House lessens the already slim chance of witnessing the kind of bravery Americans saw in former Rep. Traficant, one of the few congressmen to ever openly discuss Israeli war crimes on the House floor.
Unfortunately, this gag order can easily be considered a major victory for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a powerful Jewish lobby that was named in a number of sections written in the resolution. The ADL had lobbied hard for the legislation via its “Action Alert” campaign, which urged legislators to pass H.R 707.
Some of the key actions in the measure include “support for the mandate of the United States special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism, robust United States reporting on anti-Semitism by the Department of State and expanded Holocaust educational programs,” among other things.
So without a single objection, Congress applauded a nation that punishes its citizens for being guilty of no real crime, aside from the one Jewish interests created to make outlaws out of people who only seek to think and speak freely. Not only is the U.S. government commending a nation that enforces these Orwellian surveillance measures, but it’s also encouraging other nations to pass anti-free speech laws so they too will monitor and punish their citizens for speaking out against Israeli crimes.
