AFP AUDIO INTERVIEW
According to the Toronto Star, Canada’s version of the United States Postal Service, Canada Post, was ordered by Judy Foote, the minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada, to stop the distribution of Your Ward News, called “anti-Semitic” and “racist” by its critics.
“I have issued an interim prohibitory order to this individual, who is its editor-in-chief, advising him that he can no longer use Canada Post to spread this offensive material,” read the statement.
Your Ward News describes itself as an “anti-Marxist publication” and is distributed for free to more than 300,000 Toronto homes. The newspaper “often includes articles and illustrations of religious caricatures, among other controversial features.”
While Jewish groups lauded the clearly illegal decision, Dr. James Sears, the editor of the paper, appealed the order and is gearing up for a fight.
“Judge Judy has violated multiple sections of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and I will for sure be lawyering up for battle,” Sears wrote to the Star, who said that shutting down the “only ultra-right wing satirical” newspaper in Canada violates free speech laws.
“If we were spreading hate or libel of a criminal nature, we would have been charged a very long time ago,” Sears stated.
Sears isn’t in this fight alone.
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Canadian equivalent to the American Civil Liberties Union, wrote to the minister to express their “serious concerns” about the decision.
