New Fed Chairman Angrily Rejects Central Bank Audit

• Janet Yellen bristles when asked about audit of Federal Reserve

By Mark Anderson

When Janet Louise Yellen appeared before the House Financial Services Committee February 11, she gave relaxed answers to most questions. But two members of Congress that day touched a nerve when they each grilled the newly confirmed chairman of the privately owned and controlled Federal Reserve on the merits of former Texas maverick Representative Ron Paul’s bill to audit the Fed.

Mrs. Yellen was also scheduled to address the Senate Banking Committee February 13 as part of her twice yearly report to Congress, but it was postponed.

At the House hearing, Representative Bill Posey (R-Fla.) and Representative Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) not only pressed Mrs. Yellen on what she’d think of Paul’s bill if it were operational, they also touched on monetary policy—the Holy Grail of Fed operations.

Mrs. Yellen’s demeanor noticeably changed when that sore spot was exposed. She made it clear that in no manner whatsoever would the Fed ever allow an in-depth government audit to “second guess” the sacred monetary policy conducted behind closed doors by the Fed’s Open Market Committee (FOMC).

That committee publishes minutes and a basic schedule, but even presidents and Congress members cannot attend FOMC’s meetings. The Fed calls that “independence,” which it certainly is. But critics say that deciding how much money enters the economy, and under what terms, is a critical piece of the Fed’s actions that needs to be much better understood and closely watched, not hidden.

Posey called Paul’s audit bill “the most-sponsored bipartisan bill” that’s been put before the House in recent memory. It passed the House with flying colors in mid-2012 but was blocked in the Senate. Paul’s son, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), reintroduced it in the current Congress as S. 209. A similar bill is parked in committee on the House side.

An unavoidable question is that if Bachmann and Posey think an audit is so important, then why don’t we see more action on these ready-to-go audit bills?

When Mrs. Yellen indicated that she finds it hard to believe Congress may not fully trust the Federal Reserve, Posey shot back: “Some of us believe in the adage ‘trust but verify.’”

He told Mrs. Yellen that federal agencies are subjected to government audits that the Fed somehow avoids, apart from sundry audits conducted by private accounting firms. Why not the Fed?

Posey stressed to Mrs. Yellen that Paul’s audit bill limits itself to “post-decision audits.” That means that individual Fed actions, including those taken by the FOMC, would not be second-guessed. Posey thought that condition would cure Mrs. Yellen’s jitters about elected officials looking over the Fed’s shoulder when it devises and implements monetary policy.

He was mistaken.

While Mrs. Yellen made a throw-away remark that perhaps the Government Accountability Office could visit the Fed and read its meeting transcripts, she kept returning to the same-old Fed boilerplate that “political” intervention (read: public input or real accountability) is not welcome at the Federal Reserve.

“An audit is different than second-guessing policy judgments,” she stated with a faint hint of contempt.

As if reading a script, Mrs. Yellen repeated that the Fed’s assigned duty is to “maximize sustainable employment and price stability.” She added: “[Keeping] inflation running well below 2% is our objective.”

Mrs. Bachmann, who also pressed Mrs. Yellen about her view of an audit, stressed that there is growing public criticism of the Fed. She asked how struggling Americans could ever hope to have any control over their often gloomy economic destinies if the Fed insists that a real public audit is unacceptable.

Mrs. Yellen only replied that committee hearings like this one were pretty much all Americans and Congress could ever hope to have in terms of influencing or in any way trying to steer the Fed.

Among other things, Mrs. Yellen said the Fed has plans to carry out “proposed rulemaking” to address highly risky ventures engaged in by banks. This was in response to a question on why most banks engage in elaborate investments without providing a practical benefit to the productive sector. She added that the Fed would cooperate with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which she feels has more authority in this respect.

She also declared the dollar is stable and will always be the world’s reserve currency. But she made that statement while largely avoiding the question of what the Fed would do if the dollar loses its reserve status amid nations increasingly trading with other currencies.

She casually dodged the statement by Representative Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) that “we need Jimmy Stewart banking back in the U.S.” He was referring to the community-friendly banker played by Stewart in “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Sherman is concerned that the Fed is too tolerant of banks that only loan to large interests and deny loans to small business owners.

States Seek Restrictions on NSA Snooping; Millions Tracked to Stop No Terror Plots

By Ronald L. Ray

Ongoing revelations of the incredible extent of United States government spying on hundreds of millions of Americans prove ever more clearly AMERICAN FREE PRESS’s longstanding contention that Orwellian laws passed after September 11, 2001, were never about making the “homeland” safer, but about destroying Americans’ constitutional freedoms. It is good news, however, that a growing number of citizens, and even politicians, are waking up to the already far-reaching tyranny of the government. In the short time since AFP reported on the Fourth Amendment Protection Act (4APA), proposed in the Arizona Legislature, the list of states seeking to curb surveillance without a search warrant has grown to 14 or more.

The 4APA is model legislation proposed by the OffNow Coalition. The bill would prevent state and local government units, as well as private companies, from providing support or services to the National Security Agency (NSA). It would also keep public universities from funding or recruiting for the NSA and make data it collected without a search warrant inadmissible in state courts.

Kansas and Missouri legislators have introduced more limited versions, while Washington, Utah and a few other states may also climb on board the effort, according to Michael Maharrey of the Tenth Amendment Center, speaking to National Journal.

The ruckus around the NSA also has states looking to rein in out-of-control police forces and prosecutors. Associated Press reported on February 5, 2014, about other efforts to protect citizens’ privacy, like a proposed Colorado limitation on keeping images from license plate readers, and Indiana, Delaware and Oregon efforts to restrict collection of information from cellular telephones and text messages. Texas has already passed a digital privacy bill.

Even Congress, in this election year, may make a paltry effort to check NSA snooping through the USA Freedom Act. The bill tries to curb some surveillance of Americans, while placing minor limitations on foreign espionage. And while it does not shut down the NSA, the legislation would end authority of the FISA Amendments Act in June 2015, rather than December 2017.

Donate to us

But the military-industrial-media-banking cabals are starting to push back. Establishment media reports seek to cast doubt on grassroots efforts to keep the federal government from spying on over 300 million Americans, implying that states do not have jurisdiction over what Washington does. This is a smokescreen, though, as even the 4APA restricts efforts to what happens within a state’s borders.

A few spokesmen for law enforcement agencies warn direly that restricting already unlimited surveillance activities will unduly hamper criminal investigations. The claims attempt to instill fear into citizens and are the expressions of those who do not want to surrender their massive power to terrorize the law-abiding populace.

A long article in The Nation on February 4, 2014, reveals further that federal snoops, not content with violating the fourth amendment, are also ignoring the sixth amendment by recording privileged attorney-client telephone conversations, when no suspicion exists of criminal collusion between the two parties. But a recent Supreme Court ruling makes it nearly impossible for citizens to challenge this unconstitutional eavesdropping. The federal government seems to believe that FISA laws render the fourth and sixth amendments moot.

For all of the NSA’s spying on nearly every American and most of the rest of the world, their despotic efforts have resulted in only one “successful” prosecution arising from use of collected telephone records—one which even the Federal Bureau of Investigation admits was not a “terrorist plot”—hardly a stellar success.

All AFP readers are urged to push their political representatives to limit tightly—and preferably end—the totalitarian espionage of the NSA and other government entities.

Alternative Currency Sabotaged?

• “Bitcoin” facing uncertain future after series of suspicious setbacks

By Keith Johnson

It’s been a tough week for bitcoin, the popular alternative currency that allows consumers to transact business discreetly, outside the purview of the controlling central banks.

On February 7, Japan-based Mt. Gox, the world’s third-largest venue for exchanging bitcoin into United States dollars, caused the price of the digital currency to lose more than 20% of its beginning week value of $850 after it suspended trading amid an “increase in withdrawal traffic.” By Monday, the company announced it would halt withdrawals indefinitely after detecting “unusual activity.” As a result, the price of bitcoin plummeted a staggering 27% from its Friday closing price of $692 to $500.

This is just the latest setback for the original bitcoin exchange, which once boasted handling 80% of all bitcoin transactions but now barely represents 14% of the market currently in trade. In May 2013, Mt. Gox suffered a major public relations disaster after its U.S. bank account was seized by the Department of Homeland Security for failing to properly register as a money-services company. Prior to that, the company was targeted with a series of computer hacking attacks that caused delays in processing requests and gained them a reputation for slow payouts—something they’ve found hard to shake.

“The Mt. Gox affair is a symptom, not a cause, of deep-seated problems in the bitcoin system,” wrote Michael Hiltzik in a recent article for the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a sign that bitcoins aren’t ready to serve as anything but pieces in a very risky, speculative game.”

Donate to us

Others aren’t nearly as skeptical as Hiltzik. Among them is millionaire investor and bitcoin guru Roger Ver, who is taking Mt. Gox’s recent troubles in stride.

“This is just another temporary bump on the wild ride of bitcoin,” Ver recently told this AMERICAN FREE PRESS reporter. “I think bitcoins will increase to more than $10,000 each in the future.”

In November 2013, Ver saw the writing on the wall for Mt. Gox and told Wired magazine that he would not recommend using it as an exchange, adding: “Anybody who has enough information about what’s going on in the bitcoin world, you would not buy your bitcoins on Mt. Gox.”

When asked by this AFP reporter what the Mt. Gox debacle means for the bitcoin economy as a whole, Ver replied, “In the long run it is good for bitcoin since people will be more likely to use more responsible exchanges in the future.”

In an effort to gauge how others within the bitcoin community are reacting to the recent setback, this newspaper reached out to Jinyoung Lee Englund, director of public affairs for the Bitcoin Foundation.

When asked to respond to detractors who say that bitcoin is doomed to failure, Mrs. Englund replied: “It’s fair to say that at this stage of growth, the possibility of bitcoin succeeding versus failing is about 50-50. Obviously, there are those that believe that the odds are more in [our] favor, such as the three top tech venture capital firms in the nation as identified by Forbes magazine [that] invested over $30 million into this space in the last quarter alone. . . . But by no means do we advocate that anyone invest his life savings into bitcoin. That is a very risky endeavor. If you intend on participating in this experimental stage, be willing to lose everything you put in.”

This AFP reporter also contacted Jonathan Levin, a post-graduate economics student at the University of Oxford who has been tracking bitcoins currently in circulation. Levin sees a bigger problem than Mt. Gox on the bitcoin horizon. While preparing virtual currency statistics for the website Coinometrics.com, Levin found that huge stocks of bitcoins sitting in dormant accounts could dramatically impact the currency’s future price and stability.

“Of the total money supply, one-third of [bitcoins] are sitting in addresses that have not been touched in a year,” Levin told AFP. “If those coins were to move, then the market would have to adjust, decreasing the price of bitcoin. This dormancy of coins essentially reduces bitcoin to commodity money that can be bought at a spot price during a transaction and used as a medium of exchange. This would essentially [re-]define bitcoin as a payment network rather than a unit of account.”

Levin suggested that this “concentration of wealth” among some bitcoin users could be potentially detrimental to its acceptance as a viable medium of exchange. “In previous virtual currency schemes there have been organized methods for getting spent coins back to the users to keep the economy going,” he said. “The mechanisms by which this happens in bitcoin are far from certain and could mean that we get an oligarchic society, which I am sure none of us want. This means that when people decide whether to buy or not buy bitcoins they are speculating on the motives, incentives and decisions of the people that control large amounts of bitcoin.”

When asked by this AFP reporter to respond to Levin’s arguments, Roger Ver replied: “I don’t share these concerns. Early adopters with large caches of bitcoin have the proper incentives not to do anything to destroy the value of their bitcoin savings.”

Of course, the same could be said for other commodities, especially precious metals like gold, which often stay dormant for years as investment vehicles. Then again, precious metals have intrinsic value, whereas bitcoin—like all other fiat currencies—is only as strong as the faith one has in them.

Obama Policies Leave Blacks in Worse Plight

• African-Americans worse off than before president was elected

By Victor Thorn

When elected as the United States’ first black president in 2008, Barack Hussein Obama assured voters that the country would enter a new “post-racial America where skin color no longer mattered.” However, a February 4 study by the Emerson College Polling Society revealed that 61% of blacks believe race relations are now worse in the U.S. than they were before Obama took office.

These same individuals also feel that their standard of living and job opportunities have declined over the past few years.

Other black leaders share this view.

On October 11, 2013, Tavis Smiley, a well-known PBS commentator, said, when he was asked by Fox News talking head Sean Hannity: “Are black Americans better off five years into the Obama presidency?”  “Let me answer your question very forthrightly,” Smiley said. “No, they are not. The data is going to indicate sadly that when the Obama administration is over, black people will have lost ground in every single leading economic indicator category. On that regard, the president ought to be held responsible.”

Former National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) President Benjamin Jealous agreed. On January 29, 2013, he declared, “black folks are doing . . . worse” under Obama.

In fact, official black youth unemployment now stands at a stunning 38%. In actuality, since the Bureau of Labor Statistics constantly skews its numbers, black joblessness figures are significantly higher. Of course, many black leaders and Democratic pundits blame this phenomenon on so-called “white privilege” and racism.

White privilege is actually an anti-white movement that originated in Marxist, anti-white academic and activist circles. Over the past few years, it has gained traction in the mainstream, and, today, political agitators and university professors lead seminars, write books and give speeches denouncing whites and making many feel guilty about their own ancestors, history and achievements, while inconvenient truths are kept from the masses through anti-white propaganda.

However, not all blacks share this view. On February 6, this reporter spoke with Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson, founder of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND).

When asked why so many blacks were in this dire situation, Peterson responded, “More black babies are being born out of wedlock. When you have 74% of black children born to single mothers, your chances of doing well economically are very limited.”

As the conversation turned to why Obama refuses to use his bully pulpit to directly address this issue as he does with so many others, Peterson replied, “Obama has offered black America nothing. He got married first and didn’t have children out of wedlock. Since both his daughters attend the best schools, black poverty isn’t a priority to him and Michelle.”

“Obama wants blacks dependent and reliant on Democrats so that his party stays in control,” Peterson continued. “If that means keeping blacks down for another 100 years, they’ll do it. They only care about power.”

Speaking with a courage that’s rare in today’s politically-correct society, Peterson added: “Black leaders don’t want their people free. They want them demoralized, brainwashed and dumbed-down on the Democratic Party’s plantation where there’s free housing, food and healthcare. Relying on the government never brought anyone out of poverty.”

Offering a historical perspective on how this trend transpired, Peterson added, “The civil rights movement brought in big government and told black America that they lived in a racist society. They were supposed to believe that the white man held them back because of slavery. So, blacks were given handouts. Since they couldn’t let black men remain in the home, government became their daddy. Plus, more children born out of wedlock equates to more government care. This notion became engrained in their heads: babies equal food stamps and welfare. It’s deeply rooted in the black mindset. Today, blacks believe more in government than they do in themselves.”

Peterson concluded by describing his mission at BOND.

“For the past 24 years we’ve tried to rebuild the black family through prayer, learning trades, teaching independence, and loving your country instead of hating it,” he said. “But corrupt black leadership, including Barack Obama, doesn’t want that. They prefer that black women look to the government instead of their own families.”

Lloyd Marcus, chairman of the Conservative Campaign Committee, concurs. Since Marcus, a black man, has been welcomed to speak at over 400 tea party rallies, this newspaper decided to contact him on February 6, to discuss problems inherent within the black community.

“Blacks continually keep shooting themselves in the foot by sleeping with the enemy, namely Democrats and liberals,” he said. “These two institutions, along with the Congressional Black Caucus and liberal media, perpetually lower standards for blacks.”

When prompted for an example, Marcus stated: “The NAACP says that the need for voter IDs disenfranchises black voters. Why? Do they think blacks are too stupid to acquire an ID?”

Marcus also cited the lack of two-parent households as a major factor facing blacks.

“Data proves that black kids in fatherless households are more prone to doing drugs, joining gangs or ending up in prison,” he said. “Before LBJ’s so-called ‘War on Poverty,’ blacks were actually moving forward. But government intrusion destroyed the black family by saying, ‘We’ll be your daddy.’”

This reporter asked a similar question to Marcus: Why won’t the president use his stature in regard to this social plague?

Marcus framed his response in the following manner: “Barack Obama is foremost a socialist, progressive liberal. The Democratic Party trumps loyalty to his race. The same applies to other well-known black leaders like Reverend Al Sharpton, who also advocates a progressive agenda. I have total disdain for the NAACP, Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama. They’re all cut from the same cloth.”

The bottom line, said Marcus, is that “so many blacks are blinded by their own racism that they refuse to see Barack Obama for who he is and what he’s doing to them. They’re living in fantasy world.”

USDA Food Stamp Outrage Exposed

• Department of Agriculture vows change after “food stamps for foreigners” scheme uncovered

By Victor Thorn

As hardworking American taxpayers struggle to pay their bills, a move by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in July 2012 would surely infuriate the country’s working class.

Two years ago, the USDA used taxpayer funds to create and purchase television advertisements for a 10-part series of commercials called Parque Alegria (“Happiness Park”) on Spanish soap operas that encouraged Mexican citizens with American-born anchor babies—both legal and illegal—to apply for food stamps.

In April 2013, Judicial Watch, Inc., “a conservative, non-partisan educational foundation, promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government, politics and the law,” obtained a leaflet in Spanish that USDA officials had been circulating at the Mexican embassy. The flier not only promoted food stamp usage to those unlawfully crossing the U.S. border, but also contained the following message in boldface type: “You need not divulge information regarding your immigration status in seeking benefits for your children.” The USDA specifically asked the Mexican embassy to distribute this document to its 50 consulates.

To ensure that there are no misunderstandings as to where the Obama administration stands on this issue, USDA representatives teamed with the Mexican government in order to prevent Kansas from denying food stamps to illegal aliens.

In response to this situation, on February 6, this reporter interviewed Kristin Tate, a multimedia journalist, television correspondent for JAGTV and weekly columnist for The Washington Times Communities.

Tate told this newspaper: “Americans should be outraged that the USDA portrayed food stamps in a wholly favorable light on these silly soap opera commercials. Even worse, they’re working in conjunction with the Mexican government. This sheds some light on how out of control the welfare state is.”

“In 2013 there was $2.6 billion worth of fraud in the food stamp program,” Tate said. Not only hasn’t anybody been held accountable, but this trend shows how the Obama administration is trying to get people hooked on subsidies so that they’ll always vote for the Democratic Party. Giving food stamps to illegals also illustrates how Obama is further pushing his amnesty agenda.”

Fortunately, some changes may be on the horizon. On February 7, this newspaper reached out to Amanda Browne at the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service’s Communications Office. Although Ms. Browne couldn’t assist in determining how much money had been spent on the Spanish soap opera commercials, she did say in a statement released to the public: “USDA is not running radio or television advertising relating to SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program], and has not for several years.”

Ms. Browne added more good news. “The 2014 farm bill places new limitations on the use of federal funds for activities related to the recruitment and promotion of SNAP. This includes the inability to use funds for advertisements, specifically radio, television and billboards.”

Ms. Browne said: “The current statute (prior to the farm bill) authorizing SNAP specifically prohibits the use of federal funds to recruit participants for SNAP. The Food and Nutrition Service defines recruitment activities as an activity intended to persuade an individual who has made an informed decision not to apply for SNAP benefits to change his or her decision.”

Ms. Browne refused to say whether anyone broke the law by using taxpayers’ dollars to buy ads promoting food stamps, but clearly the program violated the USDA’s own rules. So far, though, no one has been fired let alone prosecuted for the Spanish TV ads and the fliers.

U.S. Has Transformed Libya Into Danger to All Africa

By Richard Walker

President Barack Obama and former French President Nicholas Sarkozy should have provided Libya with an “after sales agreement” when they ordered the destruction of the Libyan government and the assassination of former Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffi. That was the opinion of Niger’s Interior Minister Massoudou Hassoumi, who has called on France and the United States to bring their militaries back to Libya in order to stop the flow of arms and violent terrorists from pouring out of Libya into Niger. Southern Libya, he warned, has steadily become “an incubator” for violence and terrorism.

Christian churches in Libya have been expressing concerns as well about the plight of their members in Libya, arguing that the adoption of radical Muslim laws and growing sectarianism have placed Christians in jeopardy. In their view, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to get the mass media to focus on the issue.

There has been little coverage of the mess Libya has become since Washington and its allies washed their hands of the country. The only mention lately concerned a plan to destroy Qadaffi’s chemical weapons stockpile. According to a February 2, 2014 article in The New York Times, Washington secretly spent $45M to contain and destroy the last of Libya’s supplies of mustard gas, completing the task on January 26.

Donate to us

That announcement only served to highlight the fact that Washington and its allies failed to address the massive stockpiles of conventional weapons that fell into the hands of militias and terrorist groups. Many of those weapons were sold to Arab countries and moved out of Libya to be shipped into Turkey and then to terrorist camps in Syria.

It is believed that Qadaffi spent as much as $100B on weapons, including anti-tank missiles, surface-to-air missiles and many other weapons that in the hands of terrorists could pose a serious threat to the U.S., Europe and Russia. In October 2013, The Times of London carried a story and a photo of a militia leader, who it said was a “human trafficker,” in charge of an abandoned facility containing 4,000 surface-to air missiles.

The tragedy of Libya is the plight of its people and in particular Christians, who had hoped for better times. Washington has ignored them because focusing on their persecution would expose the reality that murdering Qadaffi has created chaos and increased violence in the region.

According to Open Doors, the international Christian organization, Libya in 2013 was the most dangerous North African country for Christians. Salafist Sunnis, the dominant sect in Libya today, have been determined to enforce strict Islamic law defining the religion of the state as Muslim. In the words of Open Doors, the aim and outcome of this strategy is to make “all [Libyan] citizens Muslim by definition.”

It should come as no surprise that the persecution of Christians across the Middle East has led to a mass exodus. Open Doors estimates 75% of Libya’s expat Christians have fled. Nevertheless, the unstable nature of the country and a growing anti-Christian atmosphere made citizens of Libya fear for their lives.

Culture War Waged at Olympics

• Russia comes under heavy attack by standing up for Christianity and Russia’s children

By Pete Papaherakles

While the Sochi Winter Olympics are in full swing in Russia, President Vladimir Putin finds himself in an even bigger contest. He is battling the relentless attack of cultural communists seeking to destroy what the good nationalists who now rule Russia are trying to construct in their own nation.

As a sign of protest against Putin, President Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron and German President Joachim Gauck are not attending the Games. Why? Because Russia supports traditional family values and opposes the promotion of sex perversion and anti-Christian activists.

In response, the United States has sent several perverts to represent the country. In addition, a number of multinational corporations, including General Motors, AT&T and Google, have taken a pro-homosexual stance.

Russian chess master Garry Kasparov, a bitter rival of Putin, said Sochi is to Putin what Berlin in 1936 was to Hitler, meaning that Putin—the new Hitler—is using the Olympics for his personal glory.

Donate to us

Yet Putin is not the one who sought this battle. He merely passed a law last year banning homosexual propaganda directed particularly at children. The law was supported by the Russian courts and 85% of the Russian people. Russia’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, concluded that Russia’s Constitution obliged the state to protect motherhood, childhood and family, and specifically to “take measures to protect children from information, propaganda and campaigns that can harm their health and moral and spiritual development.”

Putin himself said Russia isn’t “homophobic.” He believes Europeans are dying out because “gay marriages don’t produce any children.” He has banned all “gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, marches, and pickets” during the months before, during, and after the Winter Olympics, bringing about the present attacks on him by the pro pervert leadership dominating the West.

The Olympic Charter states: “The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

“Sochi is not the place to debate Russian anti-gay laws,” said Putin. Homosexuals at Sochi Olympics can feel “safe and free,” he said, as long as they “leave children in peace, please.”

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said in August that athletes and spectators attending the games, which last until Feb. 23, will face arrest, fines and deportation if they violate the law.

The contrast between Putin’s Russia and the West when it comes to family values and the homosexual agenda is stunning. Unfortunately, the West is being systematically indoctrinated with pro-homosexual attitudes where homosexuals are perceived as victims whose rights are being violated, rather than being perceived as offenders of family values or even as predators of children.

A resolution in the European Union was signed on February 4 that, among other things, advocates “respect for the gay parade” and the “creation of special youth and education programs”—in other words propaganda targeting underage children on homosexuality.

A perfect example of this pro-homosexual attitude is newly elected New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is married to a black “ex-lesbian” and whose state legalized gay marriage in 2013. De Blasio announced recently that he will not be attending New York’s famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March because it’s not homosexual enough.

Israeli Intrigues Linked to Gun Industry

• Powerful, shadowy Zionist holding company dominates American arms business

By Michael Collins Piper

Some AMERICAN FREE PRESS readers are wondering if they are on the wrong side of the issue of Zionism and Israel, a concern based on support for Israel among institutions that have been the bedrock of the American conservative movement.

This pro-Israel point of view was expressed February 10 by a reader, who wrote in a letter to AFP’s editor that she was disappointed with the newspaper’s criticism of Israel. Warning that she has considered canceling her AFP subscription, she wrote that her Bible says, “Bless my people and I will bless you.”

As recently as December 23, the John Birch Society’s The New American published a commentary complaining many Americans “believe that the Jews in Israel are an ‘occupying force’ guilty of apartheid against the Palestinian people, whose land the Jews ‘stole.’ ”

And in November, the National Rifle Association (NRA) dispatched a VIP delegation to visit Israel for a 10-day tour, described in The Jerusalem Post which reported that Joseph R. Gregory, the leader of the delegation, said “We want to demonstrate our appreciation and support of the Israeli people because we feel that Israel is important to the United States and we love our country.”

The NRA bigwigs met with Israeli police and intelligence officials who demonstrated techniques for dealing with suspected terrorists, with the Post citing “one middle-aged female delegate” as having said, “We need to have surveillance like this back home.”

The Post noted that an Israeli spokesman revealed that Israel “had worked with the NRA in the past to share information on operations, intelligence and gun-control management.”

Some take pause in that revelation in light of what the Post did not mention: Steve Friess, an Ann Arbor-based freelance journalist whose stories appear on “BuzzFeed,” one of the top 50 sites on the Internet in the U.S., has exposed the fact that while the NRA has warned against the threat of a national database of firearms or their owners, “the sort of vast, secret database the NRA often warns of already exists, despite having been assembled largely without the knowledge or consent of gun owners. It is housed in the Virginia offices of the NRA itself.”

On August 20, 2013, Mr. Friess wrote:

The country’s largest privately held database of current, former, and prospective gun owners . . . has been built through years of acquiring gun permit registration lists from state and county offices, gathering names of new owners from the thousands of gun safety classes taught by NRA-certified instructors and by buying lists of attendees of gun shows, subscribers to gun magazines, and more.

An article appearing on BuzzFeed two days later by staff reporter Kate Nocera pointed out that the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), an NRA rival “staunchly opposed to background checks for gun owners,” who maintains “that Americans have a constitutional right to carry a weapon without any government regulation or registry,” has attacked the NRA for maintaining this database. NAGR executive director Dudley Brown reflected: “We know the National Security Agency is in on everything, but the fact is, so is the NRA.”

Tying this together is that while the NRA receives much of its funding from the gun industry, the truth is that major forces in that industry are now under the control of a single giant holding company, Freedom Group (FG), which The New York Times reported on November 26, 2011, “is the most powerful and mysterious force in the American commercial gun industry today.”

Here’s where things get interesting, in light of the NRA’s support for—and cooperation with—Israel.

The Times article stated that “even within gun circles, the Freedom Group is something of an enigma. Its rise has been so swift that it has become the subject of wild speculation and grassy-knoll conspiracy theories.” The Times said, “In the realm of consumer rifles and shotguns—long guns, in the trade—[FG] is unrivaled in its size and reach,” noting that the company controls such major arms companies as Bushmaster, Remington, Marlin, Dakota Arms and DPMS Firearms as well as firearms-related manufacturers including S&K industries, silencer manufacturer Advanced Armament Corporation and Barnes Bullets.

On October 14, 2011, the NRA responded to the growing rumors about FG, asserting that “the owners and investors involved are strong supporters of the Second Amendment and are avid hunters and shooters.”

The NRA also rushed to assure that rumors that billionaire George Soros—an ardent gun control advocate—held an interest in FG were not true and somehow managed to assert with undocumented authority that he “never will be.”

What the NRA didn’t mention is that FG is a subsidiary of the more gigantic private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, L.P., and that the forces behind Cerberus are themselves most unsettling and—note this—intimately tied to the global operations of Israel and Zionism, with which the NRA has now linked itself in an open and enthusiastically collaborative manner.

It’s important to note that “Cerberus made plans to sell its share in the Freedom Group on December 18, 2012, after the Bushmaster AR-15 was used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. This decision was made due to a threat by a California state pension board, which owns a stake in the company, to dispose of stakes it holds in any firearms manufacturer that makes weapons banned by California state law.” As of this writing, Cerberus still owns FG.

The founder of Cerberus, billionaire Stephen Feinberg, was described by Israel’s Ha’aretz daily newspaper as “a New York Jew with a golden touch.” In 2006 Cerberus actually purchased the Israeli government’s interest in Bank Leumi, the second largest bank in Israel. Ha’aretz said proceeds from the purchase would go toward “paying off Israel’s high national debt.”

In fact, Cerberus is quite a powerhouse. In a 10-page article in the October 3, 2005 edition of BusinessWeek, the weekly business news magazine launched just weeks before the 1929 stock market crash, and acquired in late 2009 by Bloomberg L.P., which renamed it Bloomberg Businessweek, described Cerberus as “bigger” than such giants as McDonald’s, 3M and Coca-Cola, noting Cerberus controls some 226 Burger King restaurants, the National and Alamo car rental chains, the Formica Corp. and the old Warner Studios (which, though BusinessWeek didn’t say this, had been owned for years by different elements of the Jewish crime syndicate).

Of interest is that two major American political figures are closely associated with Cerberus: ex-Vice President Dan Quayle and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Feinberg’s front man, Quayle is chairman of the board of Cerberus. According to Ha’aretz, Feinberg is a “shy wunderkind” who “makes himself scarce around photographers and sends underlings like Cerberus chair Dan Quayle to sign his deals.”

While defense secretary, Rumsfeld was an investor in Cerberus, well before the U.S. invasion of Iraq (of which Rumsfeld and the pro-Israel lobby were among the foremost advocates)—after which Cerberus profited from setting up military base camps in Iraq.

Another major player in Feinberg’s operations is Jewish wheeler-dealer Michael Steinhardt, one of the first prominent figures in the Wall Street hedge fund racket. Steinhardt has admitted he launched his career with funding from his father, Sol Frank “Red” Steinhardt, New York’s number one “fence” of stolen jewelry, closely associated with Jewish crime syndicate chief Meyer Lansky. Steinhardt said his father gave him envelopes stuffed with $10,000 in cash—something the average American has never seen—implying that his education at the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Wharton School of Business was funded by his father’s mob lucre.

Known for his devotion to Jewish causes, exemplified by his funding of the hard-line pro-Israel “neoconservative” daily newspaper, The New York Sun, which was founded on April 16, 2002, and ceased publication on September 30, 2008, and is now published only online, Steinhardt has also been a board member and key financial backer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a lobby for the global Jewish agenda. He also chaired the Democratic Leadership Council, in which Bill and Hillary Clinton were prominent, and chairs his own Foundation for Jewish Life as well as Taglit Birthright Israel, funding travel to Israel by young American Jews.

What to make of all of this?

Pro-Israel forces are grabbing control of the gun industry and funding the NRA that is aligned with Israel. And after every gun control “scare” in America—orchestrated by the media monopoly controlled by pro-Israel financial groups—the gun industry makes gigantic profits. All the while, the NRA maintains a massive database on American gun owners.

Is there a secret agenda in play?

One of Israel’s most ubiquitous media advocates, Jennifer Rubin, on February 24, 2013, wrote in her blog in The Washington Post  that “for all intents and purposes, [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is now the West’s protector” because Barack Obama won’t wage war on Iran.

Will the NRA rally Americans to pick up arms to wage such a war, urging patriots into supporting another Israeli war of aggression—another step toward the New World Order?

What do you think?

Comedian Ignites Mass Protests; NWO Opposition Rising Dramatically

• Britain tells “thought criminal comic” he’s too politically incorrect to be allowed in UK

By Pete Papaherakles

French comedian Dieudonné has set France on fire. His persecution by the government of President François Gérard Georges Nicolas Hollande has become a catalyst causing massive crowds to protest in the streets against what the French perceive to be a Jewish stranglehold over their country’s politics and freedom of expression.

Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, 47, the son of a French mother and a father from Cameroon, has become hugely popular in France over the last few years, with his shows sold out, his videos getting millions of views online, and people around the world from workers to famous soccer players being photographed doing thequenelle,” a gesture he popularized that has recently gone viral.

Although his fans see Dieudonné and the quenelle as expressing their anger and disillusionment with “the system,” the French government has banned his shows and his opponents say Dieudonné is a dangerous “anti-Semite” who is popularizing the ideas of the extreme right.

Dieudonné’s genius with the quenelle is that he has found clever ways to get around France’s “Holocaust” denial laws by creating a gesture that can be perceived as an “up yours” to the establishment while at the same time an upside-down Nazi salute.

He has done the same with a catchy pineapple song and dance he created, “Shoananas,” with thousands of his fans singing it while displaying images of pineapples.

“Ananas” means pineapple in French and “Shoah” is the Hebrew word for the “Holocaust.” But the cleverness of the phrase is that in French it sounds like “chaud ananas,” or “hot pineapple.” “Nanas” is also French slang for “chicks.”

His fans adore him and even see him as a liberator.

“Here in France, the Shoah was like a religion that you couldn’t criticize,” said one fan. “It was like being enslaved. And now you have someone who comes to rescue you, a hero who frees your mind from the oppression.”

Dieudonné initially achieved success in the 1990s with a Jewish comedian, Élie Semoun, poking fun at racial stereotypes. He campaigned against racism and ran for office as a leftist against the far-right National Front (NF), which at that time he perceived as racist.

In 2003, Dieudonné did a comedy skit about a Nazi Israeli settler and was sued for “anti-Semitism.” He refused to apologize and denounced Zionism and the Jewish lobby.

This became a turning point in his career and he approached Jean-Marie Le Pen, then leader of NF, and became friends and and allied with him.

In 2008, Dieudonné had French “Holocaust” revisionist Robert Faurisson appear on a show with him and has described “Holocaust” remembrance as “memorial pornography.” He has since been convicted in court eight times on “anti-Semitism” charges and fined over €60,000 ($63,550).

He has increasingly been banned from mainstream media and his shows cancelled by local authorities.

Dieudonné’s quenelle gesture became notorious in December 2013, after footballer Nicolas Anelka used the gesture during a televised soccer match.

In December, while performing onstage, Dieudonné was recorded as saying about prominent French Jewish radio journalist Patrick Cohen: “Me, you see, when I hear Patrick Cohen speak, I think to myself: ‘Gas chambers . . . too bad.’”

This caused French Interior Minister Manuel Valls to declare that Dieudonné was “no longer a comedian” but “an anti-Semite and a racist” and to place a ban on his shows for being a public safety risk.

On January 28, Dieudonné’s home was raided by the police. Authorities confiscated €650,000 ($688,500) and $15,000 in cash and Dieudonne was arrested and taken into custody for several hours.

On February 3, Britain’s Home Secretary Theresa May banned Dieudonné from entering the United Kingdom to meet with Nicolas Anelka on the grounds of “public security.”

On February 12, the BBC reported that a Paris judge has ordered Dieudonné “to remove two parts of a YouTube video deemed insulting to Jews.”

Anelka has also been charged with anti-Semitism for his quenelle gesture.

In response to the ban, Dieudonné gave the queen of England his famous gesture.

Bonnes Nouvelles: Opposition to the New World Order Rising Dramatically in France

By John Friend

On January 26, as many as 160,000 French citizens took to the streets in protest against French President Francois Hollande. Fed up with internationalism, Freemasonry, Zionism and policies designed to destroy the traditional cultural makeup of France, protesters demanded Hollande—referred to by crowds of Frenchmen as “Mr. Weak”—be impeached and forcibly removed from office. Others advocated a military coup, arguing that the French army is the only institution not been compromised by Masonry and Zionism.

In some of the videos of the demonstration released online, protestors can be heard shouting what can only be described as anti-Jewish slogans. Some protestors were even denouncing and repudiating the alleged “Holocaust” narrative of WWII—a thought crime in France punishable by potentially lengthy prison sentences.

“We have had enough of international finance, the Masonic lodges and Zionism, but the French people have been lobotomized by the mass media,” explained one protester. “Only a military coup d’état can save us, because the elections are a pointless charade—designed to protect the rule of the gangsters by changing a few faces every few years.”

In previous months, the French have voiced their vehement opposition to continued non-white immigration and homosexual marriage. The French political establishment, which is heavily influenced by the same international forces controlling the United States Congress, White House and mass media, has failed to address their concerns, leading to protests and a rise in anti-establishment sentiment in France.

The Afro-French comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala, known for his powerful and politically incorrect comedic plays, has popularized the “quenelle” salute, which millions of French and other European citizens have adopted to show their opposition to the establishment. Establishment politicians, international Jewish organizations and other elites claim the quenelle salute is “a Nazi gesture that is clearly anti- Semitic,” Valérie Fourneyron, the French sports minister, recently declared.

Others say the quenelle gesture is merely away in which average people can show their disapproval of the political establishment.

Organized Jewish groups in France have demanded that YouTube, the popular video sharing website, take down a video showing the Dieudonne celebrating the quenelle gesture’s popularity. Unsurprisingly, organized Jewish groups in France and elsewhere in Europe are demanding political correctness and are willing to use the judicial system to enforce their psychological and intellectual tyranny masquerading as opposition to “racism” and “anti-Semitism.”

Other developments in Europe and America have the organized Jewish community quaking in their boots. Elie Wiesel, one of the leading propagandists promoting and perpetuating the official “Holocaust” narrative of WWII and an ardent supporter of the Jewish state of Israel, recently declared “people are no longer ashamed to be anti-Semites,” lamenting the fact that Jewry is losing control of the political and historical discourse in the Western world.

Across the globe, nationalists and freedom lovers of all racial and cultural backgrounds are voicing their opposition to political correctness, tyranny, internationalism and the forces behind these agendas. Nationalist political parties are gaining popularity in Greece, Hungary, Ukraine and other European countries, and nationalists are on the rise in America.

Euro Debt Spells Danger for Dollar

• Mexico latest country to join BRICs to replace dollar as world currency

By Bill White

Since the Bretton Woods system was established after World War II, the American dollar has been the backbone of international finance. But with American power on the wane and the United States economy in peril, even America’s closest neighbors are looking for dollar alternatives, evidenced by a recent sharp upsurge in euro-denominated debt from developing countries, particularly Mexico.

As of mid-December, $55.3B worth of euro-denominated debt had been issued in 2013, up 34% from 2012, including major issues from Mexican companies like Petróleos Mexicanos, better known as Pemex, which sold more than $2B in bonds for the Europeans in November.

Pemex, the state-owned Mexican oil and gas company, said that investor interest in euro-denominated bonds was three times that of dollar-denominated bonds, reflecting fears of the long-term stability of the dollar versus the euro.

While the Fed has begun to ease back its policy of quantitative easing (QE), which was designed to use inflation to help the banking sector, the policy has generally failed.

Donate to us

There are concerns now that QE tapering could cause deflation, as the velocity of money continues to stay low. On the other hand, rising interest rates and budget problems could cause a demand for more money printing—now a mainstream belief in much of Congress—which would hurt returns on the bonds, making them less attractive to investors. So, rather than gamble on the U.S. dollar, Pemex issued in euros, followed by a number of the other Mexican companies like América Móvil, one of world’s largest corporations, and the Mexican government itself.

“The euro ‘has emerged as a more full-fledged alternative to issuing in dollars,’ said Dmitri Gladkov, head of Russian debt capital markets at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., whose team helps Russian companies decide whether to issue bonds in euros, dollars or rubles.” ‘The capacity of the euro market has clearly proved to be exceptionally high,’” Gladkov told The Wall Street Journal, in a December 16, 2013 article entitled “Emerging-Markets Borrowers Tilt Toward Euro.”

Lower European interest rates make euro bonds more attractive to issuers, and German sovereign debt rate, which is the basis of many euro bonds, is part of a more stable, manufacturing and export-based economy.

“‘There’s both pent-up supply and pent-up demand for euro’ bonds, David Hinman, chief investment officer at SW Asset Management, LLC, said in an email” for the Journal article. “Investors are looking to diversify away from the dollar.”

This move against the dollar on global debt transactions is part of a larger move against the dollar internationally, as the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—and others have begun signing bilateral and multilateral trade agreements in national currencies, and Russia has begun proposing an alternative, Eurasian-oriented, clone of Bretton Woods.

Hillary Presidency Frightens Some

• Spokesman for “Stop Hillary” PAC says we need to be wary of Mrs. Clinton

By Victor Thorn

According to the latest federal elections filings, Hillary Clinton has been able to amass $4M for a campaign war chest despite the fact that she has not even officially declared her candidacy for the 2016 presidential election. As a result, some pundits are already lining up to crown her queen. But a variety of groups have also formed with one specific goal in mind: to ensure that Mrs. Clinton never becomes president.

One of these organizations, Stop Hillary PAC, has issued the following admonition: “Today there is no more powerful, well-connected politician in America who threatens to do real harm to the American way of life than Hillary Clinton.”

On January 31, this reporter interviewed Garrett Marquis, spokesman for Stop Hillary PAC. When questioned about the potential dangers of another Clinton in the White House, Marquis replied: “History shows why we need to be wary of her. When it comes to scandals, whether ethical or legal, Hillary’s been either directly accused or been an accomplice in so many of them. She’s a political opportunist, and has been her entire life.”

In terms of Mrs. Clinton’s cozy relationship with Wall Street, Marquis pointed out: “It’s not surprising that she criticizes big banks one day and then receives $400,000 the next from Goldman Sachs. Hillary is a liberal elitist and has been ever since hustling her way into the White House.”

Marquis added: “We need to remember how Bill and Hillary sold the Lincoln bedroom to the highest bidder. She continues to sell herself out to whoever donates the most money. The PACs [political action committees] that support her have already collected millions of dollars.”

HILLARY (AND BILL) THE MURDER VOLUME

TheMurderVolumeRS

Is the “Clinton Body Count” real, or simply an urban legend—a product of far-flung conspiracy theory?

In Part Three of the Clinton trilogyThe Murder Volume—an overwhelming amount of evidence is provided proving that the 110+ people who’ve died under mysterious circumstances—all tied in some way, shape, or form to the Clintons—far surpasses any chance of it merely being coincidence. The odds of such a phenomenon occurring naturally are, in fact, so miniscule that alternative explanations become necessary.

Citing the infamous Clinton body count, Marquis addressed recent revelations about how Mrs. Clinton’s aides also compiled a numerical enemies list of Democrats who supported Obama instead of her in 2008. Topping this list was Secretary of State John Kerry, who the Clintons categorized as “treacherous.”

“It’s clear,” Marquis said, “that if anybody crosses her, Hillary wages a vendetta against them. I don’t want someone as president that writes down names of enemies and then takes them out.”

Obama officials may have unleashed Internal Revenue Service officials on political foes, but, Marquis said, “Hillary and Bill are even worse. They epitomize dirty politics. They have never worried about skirting ethical or moral boundaries to get what they want. They’ll keep using these same practices to deceive the American public about their actual goals.”

The Stop Hillary PAC has already filed a lawsuit against the PAC behind Mrs. Clinton.

“A superPAC named “Ready for Hillary” rented [Hillary] Clinton’s 2008 email list, which is a direct violation of FEC [Federal Election Commission] laws,” Marquis explained. “We intend to hold them accountable.”

On a closing note, Marquis issued another insightful observation. “Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are linked through their policies, the liberal infrastructure, donors, and their ties to George Soros. But I have no doubt that when Hillary announces her candidacy, she’ll not only run against the GOP, but also Obama’s failures as a president, many of which she was part of.”

Putin: Eastern Champion of Western Values

• Top financial criminals in Russia want Putin ousted

By Ronald L. Ray

A war against Western civilization is taking place, but it is Russia, in the East, that is defending cultural and religious traditions, not the rulers in America or Europe.

Most of the West has capitulated to the destroyers of truth, goodness and beauty, to the sodomites and usurers, to the abortionists and warmongers, to the adorers of money. It is Russia’s President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, a former communist, who stands in the breach, while bankers and internationalists promote the likes of Mikhail Borisovich Khodorkovsky, a Russian Jewish oligarch with billions of dollars to use for the re-enslavement of the former Soviet Union.

Putin granted a humanitarian pardon in December 2013 to Khodorkovsky, a decade-long prisoner whose mother has cancer, and to a large number of others described by Putin’s critics as “political prisoners.”

Although convicted of tax evasion and moneylaundering—a conviction upheld by the European Court of Human Rights—Khodorkovsky has been portrayed by Western media and politicians as a “political prisoner” because he opposed Putin. He is the poster boy for the plutocratic fight against Russian nationalism and economic independence.

But according to a January 3 report in Germany’s National-Zeitung, even defenders of the 50-year-old multi-billionaire are forced to admit that his wealth is ill-gotten. In just 15 years, the young communist son of modest engineer parents amassed many billions of dollars under the aegis of former Russian President Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin. He was one of a handful of Jews who were given free rein by Yeltsin to enrich themselves by gaining control of much of Russia’s wealth and politics, according to the “National Journal” website.

Russian Populist: The Political Thought of Vladimir Putin

RussianPopulistRS

Russian president Vladimir Putin is one of the most reviled politicians in the West, yet few leaders worldwide have maintained such high levels of popularity. With high rates of economic growth, military and police reform, and a concerted attack on official corruption, Putin has become a trusted populist leader and a significant figure in global nationalism. While attempting to synthesize the basic political views of Putin, this book does not deal much with policy, but rather centers around the ideas that drive Putin and his reform plans in both domestic and foreign policy.

Softcover, 178 pages, $25

As Yeltsin’s energy minister, Khodorkovsky used his now-bankrupt privately-owned Bank Menatep, for shady real estate dealings and to purchase a controlling interest in the defunct Yukos Oil Company at a fraction of its value. The Yukos production division in Russia sold the oil at minimal profit to the distribution division, located in a foreign tax haven, which then sold the oil to American and Jewish interests at market rates. Khodorkovsky and his partners profited immensely and paid little or no taxes. When a local Russian mayor spoke out about Yukos’s refusal to pay taxes, a Khodorkovsky partner was implicated in the contract murder of the official.

Khodorkovsky was accused of stealing 200 million metric tons of oil from Russia—half the Yukos production—via his business practices. Thus, it was natural that, under Putin’s efforts to break the international bankster grip on Russia and regain control of natural resources, Khodorkovsky would be investigated for selling those resources out of the country.

These are by far not the only such criminal actions and should surprise no one, considering they were done by a man who still denies wrongdoing and once wrote: “[W]e are animated by riches. . . . Our compass is profit. Our idol is her majesty, capital.”

Yet this icon of usurious debt-slavers was received regally by the German government in December and granted a year’s residency. He is visiting Switzerland currently, where half of his Yukos wealth is deposited.

Khodorkovsky claims, rather disingenuously, he wants no more part in business or politics, but only desires to “help” Russian “political prisoners.” Like Jewish globalist speculator Schwartz György, better known as George Soros, the criminal ex-oligarch wants to use his “civil society” foundations to promote his depraved, money-motivated worldview and regain control of Russia.

By distorting the facts of the political situation in Russia and agitating from without, Khodorkovsky and his supporters hope to bring down Putin and vanquish the last powerful political protector of Western moral and cultural values, such as God, family and true freedom based on personal and social responsibility. Putin, however, has ordered “battle lines” to defend our civilization.

Pope Tackles Vatican Gay Network Charges

By Victor Thorn

This won’t be your same old Vatican anymore, at least if Jorge Mario Bergoglio, better known as Pope Francis, has anything to say about it.

As Time magazine’s 2013 Person of the Year, the new pontiff has vowed to clean-up a host of scandals within the church while bringing it into the 21st century.

With the Catholic Church still reeling from a disastrous blight involving pedophile priests, Pope Francis seemed to handle new allegations of a “secret homosexual network inside the Vatican” with his usual grace and humor.

While touring Brazil in July 2013, Francis first made reference to the issue of a nefarious cabal operating inside the Vatican.

“There is so much being written about the gay lobby. I haven’t met anyone in the Vatican yet who has ‘gay’ written on their identity cards. There is a distinction between being gay, being this way inclined and lobbying. Lobbies are not good. If a gay person is in eager search of God, who am I to judge them? The Catholic Church teaches that gay people should not be discriminated against; they should be made to feel welcome. Being gay is not the problem, lobbying is the problem and this goes for any type of lobby, business lobbies, political lobbies and Masonic lobbies.”

Yet, in a January 20 article in The Guardian, former commandant of the Swiss Guard Elmar Mader broached this controversial subject. As the leader of a group that’s sworn to protect the pope, Mader stated: “I cannot refute the claim that there is a network of homosexuals [in the Vatican]. My experiences would indicate the existence of such a thing.”

“A working environment in which the great majority of men are unmarried is a draw for homosexuals,” Mader added.

Finalizing his thoughts, Mader warned: “I’ve learned that many homosexuals are inclined to be more loyal to each other than to other people or institutions. If this loyalty were to go as far as to become a network or even a kind of secret society, I would not tolerate it in my sphere of decision making. Key people in the Vatican now seem to think similarly.”

Amid this dichotomy of a more tolerant Pope versus lingering numbers of hardliners that want to preserve tradition, on January 28 this reporter contacted Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, “a gay-positive ministry of advocacy and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Catholics, and reconciliation within the larger Christian and civil communities.”

DeBernardo told this newspaper: “It’s more than likely there are gay people at the Vatican,” he began. “Like all groups, some may do good work, whereas others may do harm. What’s most important, we believe, is a need for honesty and openness in discussing sexuality within the Church. Without honesty, only harm will occur.”

“If gays were not as stigmatized within the Catholic Church as they are,” DeBernardo summarized, “there’d be no need for them to go underground in the Vatican.”

On January 28, this reporter also spoke with Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, an organization that promotes diversity among Catholics.

“When I hear about a gay mafia, it sounds like a throwback to the 1950s where homosexuals were viewed as sick or criminal,” she said. “Most of the world has moved past that type of thinking.”

“The Vatican is a very different place than anywhere else,” she continued. “Of the 600 people that live there, 90% are men, while there are less than 10 children. It’s not a life most people on the outside can relate to, and vice versa for the priests.”

Regardless of the opposition among diehards, Duddy-Burke sees a great deal of encouragement on the horizon.

“Pope Francis is more willing to address these issues and create a climate of helpfulness. Past attitudes of secrecy and keeping things in the dark prevented priests from speaking out. That created a ripple effect which damaged a lot of people’s lives.”
